2009 THUNDER MUG

HOSTED BY THE DPMYC

REGATTA REPORT

The 2009 Thunder Mug Regatta hosted by the DPMYC in Killingworth CT is the last EC-12 regatta in the New England Cup.

.

The course was set-up as a windward-leeward all races were run as twice around.  The format was to race a set of three races followed by a 15 minute break to allow time for rig adjustments, battery changes or just the chance to get off your feet for 15 minutes.

The Racing venue in Killingworth is a 35 acre private pond the result of a gravel quarry.  The pond is over 100 feet deep in places and the recovered landscape is rising hill side.

This offers essentially stadium sailing.  The elevated view improves depth perception for all competitors and a unique experience.

The weather was cooperative on both Saturday and Sunday.  Saturday brought overcast sky’s with a NE breeze all day velocities were from 5-10 mph allowing the fleet to complete 21 races.  Sunday offered a north westerly breeze in the same velocity range and 30 degree headers and lifts.  The regatta finished with 32 completed races.

At the end of the regatta there was no doubt that Dave Ramos was the King of the Hill followed by Bruce Walton and Chuck Luscomb.

Prior to the start of the regatta there was a tight race between Bruce Walton and Dr. Robert Greer for the New England Cup.  These two were separated by only 2 points after three regattas. The owner ship for 2009 would be determined at the Thunder Mug.

Bruce Walton’s second place finish secured the New England Cup for a second year. Congratulations to Bruce for an outstanding season.

After racing on Saturday dinner was hosted by the Poindexters.  Cocktails and ordure’s preceded a great Lasagna dinner.  The party settled out on the deck with war stories of life and sailing from the group.  A great evening was had by all.

A tremendous thank you to Jill and Chuck Poindexter not only for opening their home but there support to the Dry Pants Model Yacht Club and the classes we sail.

A regatta requires order and management.  Mark Benedict our RD ran a spotless regatta with the help of Walter Harris, Bill Hincks, and Susan Jobson.   Mark pulled double duty by also setting and managing the course as well as setting up tents for his staff of score keepers.  This starts at 7:30 AM so racing can start by 9:30.   Many thanks, to Mark and his staff for an outstanding job.

Thanks also need to go out to Bill Dempsey, Chuck Luscomb, and the Vinuty family for allowing us to use their property for our enjoyment.
